I am replacing/upgrading a server running a product called TestDirector and an Oracle 8 database. I need to upgrade the Oracle database to 9i and then to 10g (have to do this as test director will require a stepped upgrade as well on each version). I have built a complete new server and installed Oracle 9i software only and have not created a new database on this. I would like to simply import and upgrade the database from the 8 server into the fresh install 9i on the other server and I don't really know what I am doing! All I have managed to do so far is create a dmp file from Data Manager in version 8. I have never used Oracle before so I would appreciate any advice anyone can offer Smile

Many thanks in advance.

No offense is intended but your company should hire somebody who actually knows Oracle & how it works.

See the 1st problem is that you do not realize that a functioning database must exist before you can do an import.
Therefore having just a dump file & the V9 s/w installed is necessary but not sufficient to get the application "upgraded/migrated".

You don't know, what you don't know.
There are many potential GOTCHAS that will severely impede any progress for anyone who has never worked with Oracle before now.

If you google 'upgrade oracle database' you will find articles like http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe10gdb/install/9i10g/9i10g.htm this is for 9 to 10, look around the Oracle site and there will be one for 8 to 9.
