What is the different between the varchar2 and nvarchar2 in oracle 9i?

Any one can you tell me in performance tuning persfective?

Datatypes
Don't use N% datatype unless you can't do otherwise.
They are there for backward compatibility.
They were created when Unicode character sets did not exist.
