redo files are on raid 5 ? why ? [message #192875]

why is it recommended to have redo log files to be stored on raid 5 disk sets. ??

what is the benefit ??

Hi,

The log files are very much importent part of the database. In case the database failes you can recover the database through log files. These redo log files will be archived based on you database is in archivelog mode.

For protecting or any point of time do not loss the data people will setup the database in raid control systems.

Not sure where you saw the recommendation to use RAID 5 for redo logs??

The docs specifically state "Avoiding the use of RAID 5 for redo logs".

I think that is because redo logs are write-intensive and very sequential. If you have a drive (preferrably striped drives) dedicated, then the drive heads don't have to move around as much and can efficiently stream the redo logs to the disk.
