The suggested "fix" worked! Thanks a million!
One additional step was taken, though...in the registry I also removed HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ORACLE
The entry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/ had already been removed by the uninstall program, along with all references in the PATH.
