I am trying to install oracle 8.1.7 on my Redhat 7.2
box. I have done all the pre-installation tasks, and
I can start "Oracle Universal Installer" without
trouble, but when I click the 'next' button or any of
the other buttons in the bottom row of buttons
nothing happens!
Does someone know what the problem is?

I found the same problem - it drve me insane until I
found this solution on a Suse mailing list.

I think it's something weird to do with X and oracle's
JRE.

I was running X as my normal user and using SU in a terminal
to run the installer as the oracle user (as any sane person would)
but the bottom row of buttons on the first screen of the
installer refused to work.

Logging out of the system completely and runing X as the
oracle user works!

I'm now going to plunge headlong into the install itself...

Wish me luck....

After restarting X again as my usual user, the
installer seemed to work.

Perhaps it was just a reboot of X that was needed.

I have experienced problems with various java
GUI apps before with my system that have been fixed
by re-starting X

I'm running Red-Hat 7.2 - pretty default install with the update
scripts performed about two months ago.

I, too had this problem (SUSE 7.2).

I did a recursive chown on both the installer directory (Disk1), and the java runtimes (jdk...)

like this:

chown oracle.dba -R Disk1

Thanks for posting, it's because of your post that I got
the installer to finally work!

I am trying to install oracle 8.1.6 on my NT Workstation 4. Same problem happens to me. i.e. I can start "Oracle Universal Installer" without
trouble, but when I click the 'next' button or any of
the other buttons in the bottom row of buttons
nothing happens!

I could install Oracle on my workstation before.. after uninstalling it and playing with something which I forgot. Problem starts.

Please help & Thanks
Gregory
