Invoked the define_editor=notepad command at the SQL prompt. When I type "edit", I receive the message "SP2-0107: Nothing to save." or sometimes "Wrote file afiedt.buf"

Am I wrong to think that the afiedt.buf file is supposed to be my open, blank notepad window?

The editor in sqlplus is for existing content in the buffer. Once you invoke a command you can use edit. To create a new script you have to use an outside editor like notepad.
