Hello,

I need to install Oracle Database 12c on a system that is already running 11g.
Since Oracle has been running on the server, Oracle users and groups already exist. There is no "oinstall" group, there is "oracle" group with "oracle" user, and that is how the current system setup.
inventory_loc=/home/oracle/app/oraInventory
inst_group=oracle

Do I need to install the RPM package - oracle-rdbms-server-12cR1-preinstall or oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall - anyway?

Also... Even though it is a development environment, any interruption of the existing development would be highly unwanted. I'm going to create and install 12c into a ceparate Oracle Home. Anything I need to watch out for? Any possible complications for the existing 11g?

Thank you for your suggestions.

Products: RHEL Server 5.5. Oracle 12c, Oracle 11g

Are these packages also for RHEL? I believe they are for Oracle Linux

I do not expect problems. Just keep the 11g and 12c out of eachothers way.

Database 12.x is not actually supported by Oracle on Linux 5.5. That doesn't mean that it will not work, but it does mean that you are on your own.

THank you.

Looks like there are RPMs:
From Oracle Database Installation Guide 12c Release 1 (12.1) for Linux
Oracle Database Preinstallation tasks
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E16655_01/install.121/e17720/pre_install.htm#LADBI7493

"If your Linux distribution is Oracle Linux, or Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and you are an Oracle Linux customer, then you can complete most preinstallation configuration tasks by using the Oracle RDBMS Server 12cR1 Pre-Install RPM,"

Regarding Linux version:

Requirements from the document:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
Supported distributions: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Update 6: 2.6.18-238.0.0.0.1.el5 or later

Linux version I have on the server:
Linux ***** 2.6.18-194.el5 #1 SMP Tue Mar 16 21:52:39 EDT 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Version I have is older, however I do not have much choice, have to try to install on whatever Linux version I have.

THank you
