Hello guys,

I want to design an oracle application that can use a database in a server.

My OS is windows vista so what is the most suitable and easy to use:

1- database?
2- database designer?
3- oracle forms developer?
4- oracle reports developer?

and where can I download them from?

Thank you for your help in advance.

The answer is always "the latest version that is certified with your configuration." I am sorry, for some reason I cannot find the link to the certification matrix.

http://download.oracle.com for software. It is for personal use. If you really want to have an application, you will need to pay for the software.

Software you specified 2 messages above seem to be OK (at least, database & SQL Developer are. I don't use Forms 11g so I can't tell for sure, but yes - they are part of Fusion Middleware now).

As of "better and easy options to use", you failed to answer my previous question, so I'll repeat it: what kind of an application do you plan to develop? What will it do? What kind of information will it deal with? Because, it is like the following dialogue:
- you: I want to travel
- me: what kind of a travel is it going to be?
- you: such that I'll move from here to there
- me: OK, take a bike
- you: right, but it is too far to go there by bike
- me: take a car, then
- you: no, you didn't understand, I want to go to the Moon
- me: so you'll need a rocket

Got the idea? Depending on WHAT you want to do, we could suggest a TOOL to do that. Just like BlackSwan uses to say: While a hammer is a fine tool, it is a suboptimal choice when the task is to make 2 pieces of lumber from 1 board.

Ok, littlefoot

The idea is to learn by myself but I want it to be similar to reality. I want to develop a storage database that can be used by 5-10 users at the same time. I plan to create a main form with menu then move to another forms which save the details of the store including getting its site on the map in the same form by intering its GPS details. something like a form and subforms, search the stores data ...etc. Also, I want to be able to save attachements in the database through the forms. Baisically, like any database application.

I hope you got me now Smile

As mentioned previously, you will have to purchase the software to do this since you plan on making it a multi-user system.

Installing all those products is a rather large undertaking. Database, probably straightforward. Application server (aka. Fusion Middleware), not. I wish you luck, because I had a heck of a time with 10g application server configuration.

Forms, along with the Web Logic server, might be an overkill for such an application (besides, it costs money. A lot of money).

Have a look at Application Express; it is already pre-installed with 11g Express Edition database (so you don't even have to install anything but the database itself). Moreover, it is free (costs NO money).

What should I do?

What should I do?

Read the documentation? (Accessing Oracle Application Express from the Database Home Page)

can I create forms and reports with the Application Express?

Yes; though, reports (if you want to print them) aren't pretty. There are (free) reporting tools that work fine with Apex, such as iReport. Dietmar Aust wrote guidelines so that you'd easily integrate Apex with Jasper Reports (i.e. iReport).

Thanks for your reply, Littlefoot. Do I still need the "SQL Developer" or can I create tables, views and relations with APEX?

Both can do that job, but SQL Developer is much more powerful.

Hello Joy, Littlefoot,

Can I use Oracle Developer Suite 10g (10.1.2.0.2) to create forms and reports bearing in mind that I have already downloded the Oracle Database 11g Express Edition?

Is it free? And does this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hs8jpRklez4 explain the way to do it?

Thanks a lot.

As far as I can tell, Forms 10g will work OK with 11g XE database.

It is free ONLY for your personal use. As you explained earlier, you'd want to create an application which will be used by several people. In that case, you have to pay for the the licence. How much? No idea, contact Oracle.

Youtube: yes, it explains some aspects. Regarding its length (7 minutes), these are only basics (but might get you started).

Thanks for your quick reply. I like forms 10g because it looks similar to to orcle developer 8i which I used to use. Can I create reports with Oracle Developer Suite 10g?

There's no "developer 8i", never was.

Developer suite contains both Forms & Reports, so - yes, you can create reports.
