I am in the process of writing a spatial adapter for Oracle to work with Ruby's RGeo package. The previous incarnation of our database used the SDO_GEOMETRY datatype for storing our geospatial information. However, I've noticed that Oracle also supports the POINT, POLYGON, LINESTRING, etc. datatypes. These datatypes don't seem to interact with the other Oracle packages like SDO_UTIL. I cannot seem to find any information regarding these datatypes and how you interact with them. Is this a different product than Oracle Spatial (i.e. Oracle Locator)? Where can I find documentation on these features?

POINT, POLYGON, LINESTRING and others are geometries one can store in a column of type SDO_GEMETRY. You can find these informations at Spatial Data Types.
