TNSNAMES.ORA file is really a client file & not a DB Server file.
No TNSNAMES.ORA file is required to operate Oracle DB on server system.

It would be helpful if you followed Posting Guidelines - http://www.orafaq.com/forum/t/88153/0/

Hello Sir,

I agree to your answer but partially, we do have tnsnames.ora file in the server as well, and we do need to make the entries in the file, if we want to connect to the other database server.

It is not necessary that we need to make the connection through the Client only if we can connect through the entries in the tnsnames.ora file of the Server.

Correct me If I am wrong.

Thanks
Deepak

You are not wrong but you question was:

Quote:
There was no file tnsname.ora. can anyone tell me reason for this?

And BlackSwan answered it. Unless you yourself put a tnsnames.ora there is no reason there is one.

Michel

Maybe you executed netca (network assistant) during installation when it asked you if you want to.

Too bad you chose not to comply with Posting Guidelines http://www.orafaq.com/forum/t/88153/0/
& post Operating System name & version

post full directory listing including file creation time for ORACLE_HOME/network/admin
