I Googled for it; did you? If so, did you find anything useful, or none of returned documents was good enough?

Also, I believe that My Oracle Support also contains information (at least, saw references on Google).

For Oracle 10g, Oracle Text does not automatically come with the database installation. You have to download the "companion CD", run the executable, and follow the instructions. You should find on the "companion CD" on the same page that you found the database download. Make sure you get the correct one for your system and version. In 11g, it is called the "examples" instead of the "companion CD". When you have finizhed, you should have a ctxsys user. If you encounter any problems, please feel free to post them here.

Your instructions, Barbara, sound easy and straightforward.

How come that Oracle Text installation makes so much trouble for people? One of them saysGoogle

I had a tough time finding the instructions on how to manually install Oracle Text on a 10g database. I googled, yahoo'd, tahiti'd, no luck

What is so mysterious about it?

There is a lot of conflicting information out there and things change with each version and release. One of the biggest things is that people don't know that they have to download the companion CD. It doesn't come with the database, except with the express edition. They end up looking for things that don't exist. Another problem is trying to do things the hard way, by locating and running individual scripts, resulting in an incomplete installation, instead of using the automated process.

I see; so it seems that Oracle Text installation is for someone who is in the business and is aware of frequent changes (between versions and releases) - what worked yesterday doesn't have to work today. For a newbie, it looks like a painful task.

I believe Oracle TEXT does come with just the database install itself without having to download the Companion CD. The scripts should be in $ORACLE_HOME/ctx/admin directory.

If you want to install TEXT in a database, you can also use DBCA.

It has been a while since I did my installation. I remember that I had to download the companion CD for 10g and examples for 11g to get all the Text stuff to work. After reading your post, I checked and realized it was just the "knowledge bases" (supplied thesauri) that are separate and required for some of the Text features.

As mentioned above, use the Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA) and select 'Configure Database Options' then 'Oracle Text'.

It wasn't immediately obvious to me either because I was looking in Oracle Universal Installer for this option.
