How do I know what your hostname is ?? You need to check your listener.ora file and potentially your firewall settings.

I do not know or do VMWARE & so I will withdraw from this thread.
I have no clue as to what is required to get from the virtual world across the great divide to the real world.

Lost 30M...yeah you better stick to Oracle! However, I feel that I've lost 30yrs of life with the headaches Oracle causes.

Post the output of the following:

cat $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/listener.ora

For V10 Oracle listener.ora is no longer required.

>when i type host_name:port_number/em
Where did you type "host_name:port_number/em"?

Accessing EM via a browser, has NOTHING to do with Oracle listener.

Issuing a request via web browser, requires a functioning webserver

Do you have a functioning webserver?

The command below will which process is listening on which port on your system

netstat -a | grep LISTEN

As root, use vi to change file.

If you don't know how to use vi check vi cheat sheet.

Some/many folks are challenged to get EM running on real hardware.
You are compounding the complexity by attempting to do so in a virtual environment.
EM is very, very picky about the networking environment, all of which is OS dependent & has nothing to do with Oracle RDBMS.

Good Luck!
