Hello,

We have one Oracle Server (running Windows 2012 R2) and
we are planing to create a cold standby server.
The server should be prepared in case we have an OS or hardware issue.

Would would be the correct way to prepare the new server?

My idea was:
- Install OS, name the server the same hostname (no network connection)
- Install Oracle Software

My question is, how would I register the databases on the new server?
Our Oracle DB is saved on a LUN in our SAN.
So in case I can map this LUN to the new server, but how would I get the
DB registered?

You need to be sure of your licence situation. Have you licensed both machines? It is easy to get into trouble setting up this sort of thing.

Hello John,

what I thought was, that if there is only one instance of Oracle is running, there is no second license required.
But I might be wrong.
So you say, even if the second server is offline, it would require a license because Oracle is installed?

Anyway, what would be the technical way to create such a standby server?
What would be the right order?

If the standby is always off, how could this be a standby?
Define what you mean by "cold stanby".
Explain what is the actual business requirements.

Hello Michel,

with cold standby I mean:

- a server that is prepared with OS, Oracle software is installed
- a server that is offline and could be actived in case the primary server fails
- the database files itself will be mounted via iSCSI from the SAN

So the idea was to create a "standby" server (maybe the wrong term)
that can be used in case the primary server has a hardware or software fail.

The server should be prepared in case we have an OS or hardware issue.
And what if your "hardware issue" is the SAN - where your database files are located?

What if your "hardware issue" is a fire or flood that takes out the entire data center?

Actually, this type of fault tolerance is not that unreasonable (or uncommon). It may well be (depending on detail) that Matthias will not have to license the second node. Furthermore, if he installs Grid Infrastructure on both nodes using the SAN as the shared storage, he can then define the database as policy managed to automate failover of the instance from one node to another, with the failover being transparent to users because they will connect through SCAN listeners. All they will see is a short break in service as their sessions reconnect.
You can get pretty good HA very cheaply that way.

Ok, I did not mention the SAN has a async replica in a different branch a few kilometers from here.

So I will verfiy the license situation.

We did also think of the Grid solution. Did anyone use Grid on Windows before?
Our Oracle consultant told us that he would not recommend to use Grid on Windows because he
ran into a lot issues in past.

That tells you that your Oracle consultant is incompetent. I'm installing RAC on Windows this week.

I'm sure you now understand that there is a huge difference in licensing between "Our Oracle DB is saved on a LUN in our SAN.
So in case I can map this LUN to the new server, " and "the SAN has a async replica in a different branch a few kilometers from here.".

Hello,

I have asked Oracle and they told me
that in this case we will have to license both machines.
So we have decided against this solution.

A question from November 2016 till August 2017, I though a scenario: You walked through to Oracle head office, sent a question to someone who have had responsibility to answer to you, and you met a beautiful girl. In your mind at this time, the boss's requirement would be gone to somewhere, maybe over the earth, and ... your couple have just finished on going to holiday till now.

My question is: What a kind of your boss? Is he is very gently man? Where is your office, I just want to apply! Very Happy
