This is just an introduction post. Currently learning Oracle 11.0.1.0 Having a good time learning, but this RAC networking is driving me crazy!!!

Anyways I have been learning Oracle since about November and have amassed plenty of experience for a newbie. I know what a datafile, spfile, and control file is now =)

I have also learned RMAN backups, Full BackUp and Incremental BackUps as well as RMAN Database Cloning (only dbca) as the manual method is confusing and I often have to look at forums or google.

My favorite project so far has been learning DataGuard but if I can figure out this RAC Administration I may be switching to that.

Anyways I do wonder how many of you guys use Data Guard in your environment and if you have a server in NY do you have your fail safe server say somewhere in China???

Welcome to the forum, dbalex407. Glad you're enjoying learning. But you do know that Oracle 18c is out now, right? Smile

But to answer your Data Guard question, as long as you have network connectivity between your database servers they can be located anywhere geographically. Politically however, US data in China might be subject to restrictions Wink

Got to start somewhere. But are these companies really using 18c in prod already?

18c is release 12.2.0.2, with a new name. 19c is 12.2.0.3. All explained in MOS Doc Id 742060.1

There are usage cases for running your Data Guard standbys on the same machine as the primary, though a separate VM would be good. It can give you a lot more than protection against data loss, particularly if you use Snapshot Standby, or Logical Standby, or can license Active Data Guard. Not to say that China wouldn't be a good idea, though it can be a bit fragile.
