I read somewhere that the share price dropped 3%, but has since recovered.

My personal recurring nightmare is that I'll turn on the radio one morning and hear that IBM has bought Oracle and closed it down.

It has been internally circulated to refrain from discussing about this Wink What I heard is not a goodbye, rather a step down from CEO position. And there would be 2 people(don't wanna name them, I like only one of them) taking up his position. Oh, by the way, it was Larry's wish to takeover IBM Smile

What do you think, how good is Larry in SQL? Does he "remember" how to write a SELECT statement? How good would he be in answering questions in our (PL/)SQL forum? I'm sure he is really good in writing millions and billions, but - did he forget the basics?

I suspect that Larry keeps on top of the technical side. The only time I've seen him was at an Openworld, in 1999 I think (why and how I was there is a story for another day) (as is what I think of Openworld - and what I think of Larry) and he demo'ed using a cell phone to book an airline ticket. When the demo went bad, he did seem to understand what was going on. If I were on his staff, I would not assume that he was incapable of understanding and advising on technical issues I was facing.

I'd love to hear why, how and what so - if it is not a problem, share the story with us.

As of Larry: back in 1999 (15 years ago, we weren't hit the Y2K bug yet, Oracle was still young (and so were we), people still used Oracle 7 & character mode Forms applications, Google was based in a garage etc.) that might have been the case; I mean, Larry knowing what was going on with Oracle.

Oracle became a MONSTER of a company since 1999. Just go to OTN's download page ... you'd be in a trouble without a scrolling wheel on your mouse. It is quite impossible for someone to know all those products. True, plenty of them were bought by Oracle. But, look at us (regulars on OraFAQ): do we have enough knowledge to cover 4-5 areas? We can write SQL (and we aren't equal there), DBAs know much about system administration & backups & stuff, but know nothing about, say, Jdeveloper or Apex. A Forms developer hardly knows how to spell "DBA", most of us can't answer Oracle Apps. questions, etc.

Larry probably knows something about everything, but - as the product palette grows, he knows less and less about more and more things. It seems that he reached the point where he knows nothing about everything.

That is opposite from a specialist, who knows everything about nothing (as he knows more and more about narrower and narrower area of the interest).

Just kidding.

I tuned in late and am trying to make sense of this thread. Littlefoot seems to have answered a question that I can't see. Then Mahesh Rajendran appears to have quoted the question that Littlefoot answered that I can't see. It looks like Lalit asked the question, then after people responded, edited his post, removing the question.

Lalit,
Even though you now have moderator privileges that enable you to do that, please don't, as it destroys the continuity of the thread, and this is why we don't allow non-moderators to edit their post after people have responded. If, for some strange reason, you feel that you must do this, then at least make a note that you removed a question or whatever you did, and indicate the reason why.

-- added next paragraph on edit:

On second thought, after looking at the times, I am guessing that Littlefoot and Mahesh Rajendran responded to the initial version received via email or some such thing, after the change was made on the forum. I don't know how to avoid that sort of confusion.

Hello Barbara,

I have no clue what you are talking about. I just replied to John's topic, "Goodbye, Larry". And yes I was the first one to reply. But, other than that I didn't do anything as you mentioned.

And regarding the moderator privileges, I have NEVER misused the MOD privileges, in fact, I have always tried to my best with the privilege.

Perhaps you have mistaken somewhere. And I understand it. But, if you still think otherwise, please let me know. I would try to clarify.

<snip>

The full tale of Why-How-What and Me-OpenWorld-Larry will have to wait for another day. Actually, I would like to include it in a book I proposed http://www.orafaq.com/forum/m/495359/?srch=book#msg_495359 which never got anywhere due to lack of interest. If anyone is interested now, let me know.

I can offer one little story, though:
A person I knew once told me of a meeting at Redwood Shores where Larry came in, unexpected. She said that "it felt as though Evil had entered the room."

Lalit,

I withdraw my comments and apologize. I was confused and have figured it out now. I thought Littlefoot was responding to a question that you asked, then removed, and that Mahesh Rajedran was quoting the same question by you. I now see that Littlefoot actually asked the question and then Mahesh Rajendran quoted what Littlefoot asked. Seeing that you had edited your post added to the confusion. Also, since I still do not receive email notifications, I could not see what the original version was before your edit, so my guess as to what happened was incorrect.

Sorry,
Barbara

Barbara,

No problem. I understand your confusion as you are not receiving email notifications. As I said, "Perhaps you have mistaken" Smile

Following Larry's departure, the OTN forums and MOSC have lost a whole week of data:
https://community.oracle.com/thread/3607964
That's what happens when the main man takes his eye off the ball!

I remember a few years ago (between release 6 and release 7, perhaps?) Larry took a lot of time out for racing yachts or flying his MIG fighter or some such nonsense and the company started losing money, development slowed, a general loss of direction.

According to what I just read, last week's posts are back, but today's is missing. I won't even try to post a link, since the one you posted is no longer valid and things seem to keep shuffling endlessly.

Generally speaking, I don't think the OTN forum's issue is due to Larry's news Smile

Because, OTN forum administration is not such an important group under Larry's org. structure, compared to the SALES and SECURITY LOBs. Well, there are so many rumours about the org. structure and the importance of their heads, but, this one is for sure not that important when compared to other aspects.

Lest, there shouldn't be any issue with the forums Smile

LF repeat time, it make me remember about one of memory funny character when I worked on Oracle 7 in Lotus at the first year as DBA, 1998, never forget it. I dropped one Production Database, God bless, my team leader had got export full backup 20m before. Thank you, if you were be there, I must drink with you, and if you forgive, take one cigar, please tell me more than about Oracle.

One memory I would not forget, at 2007, we faced of the connection problem in huge Application. When we detected root cause, we decided to buy Tuxedo application licsene instead of migration from Crystal Report to Oracle. How far we upgraded our App with Tuxedo? Earlier than 1 year, and, Oracle bough this company(!). The Monster Oracle eat many many other famous technical company, group, Sun was another example.
