What could be the reason? Is it the db_recovery_file_dest_size that is conflicting as the size specified is limited If Yes, then how can I remove the limit of size on this parameter.

Yes.

Increase its value. See DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE in documentation.

1/ Use CODE tags then it is easier to read (don't you think it is easier now I added it?)
2/ Remove from output useless lines like "SQL> " alone.
3/ See you set the max size, if you want more (and have it) then increase the value
4/ If you can't increase the value then remove some contents defining an appropriate RMAN policy and execute "delete obsolete".

Michel

Hello dsharma

Use the leftmost icon in 'Formatting tools:'
It looks like {-}

Alternatively you can enclose the 'code and code output' related text in the
 and
tags

your rman output shows foll

ORA-19804: cannot reclaim 52428800 bytes disk space from 5368709120 limit

as michel instructed you should opt for one of the options:

Quote:
See you set the max size, if you want more (and have it) then increase the value

If you can't increase the value then remove some contents defining an appropriate RMAN policy and execute "delete obsolete".

Hi All,

Thanks everyone for your efforts, my last simple questions is there minimum value for the parameter "db_recovery_file_dest_size" and Can I set this parameter with no value or null so that It can take all the disk space availble on my disk as default value.

Deepak

It is not a minimal but a maximal one.
You can set it to the size of your disk (or even greater) but take care that now Oracle will not be able to appropriately check the space and can then fails because of "no more space left on disk".
This parameter is there to protect you not to constrain you.

The problem is not the space in the FRA but the size of a single file that exceeds the OS limit.
First check you have no limit in your OS profile: "ulimit -a".

Hello

Below is the result of ulimit -a
$ ulimit -a
time(seconds)        unlimited
file(blocks)         unlimited
data(kbytes)         unlimited
stack(kbytes)        4194304
memory(kbytes)       unlimited
coredump(blocks)     unlimited
nofiles(descriptors) unlimited
threads(per process) unlimited
processes(per user)  unlimited

Command that I have executed in RMAN prompt (to take the backup of datafile 5 which is of size 10GB) is:
backup as compressed backupset datafile 5;

Can you also please confirm that will RMAN use the TEMP tablespace to perform its activities? Please suggest.

What is your OS?
Note that you may have a hard limit (by default ulimit shows the soft limits which are at most equal to the hard limits).
Check "ulimit -Ha"
If "file size" is still "unlimited" then you encountered the OS limit.

Michel

We are working with "AIX 6.1" in UNIX environment.
Getting the same result with ulimit -Ha also. Any check has to be done from OS level?

Use MAXPIECESIZE option on ALLOCATE CHANNEL command in your RMAN backup script to limit the size of each backup file.
